Increase your Market value

Quite some people assume that as soon as one has finished colleges learning time is over. Learning time is never over. As soon as colleges are finished real learning time starts. Learning and career making is a lifelong process that does not end with securing a job and staying there till you retire. Make a “marketing plan” for yourself, set your long-term career goals and invest in your market value.

1. Create a strategy with a long-term vision

Make sure you have a clear mission and vision. Plan ahead and be aware of your own goals. Make sure you are the boss of your own career. Choose your own direction and make your own decisions. Take on projects and assignments that lead you further along your chosen route and try to get away from others that do not promote your growth and advancement whenever it is possible.

 

2. Build a network inside and outside your company

Make sure you know the right people in the right networks. Create a network of people inside and outside company and in various specializations. The more connected you are to carious networks of people the more secure your positions is and will be. Contact people you know on a regulary bases and make sure one knows you if required. Become a member of network clubs, social events and / or professional associates.

 

3. Make sure you know your own profession and the industry

Research your industry thoroughly. Learn about competitors and new areas, products and innovations in the industry. The more you know about your domain, the more valuable you are to your present employer and the easier it is for you to market yourself to a different company.

 

4. Go back to school and develop yourself

Take a course, a training or any guidance that might help you forward. Invest in yourself. Invest both time and money in ordert to upgrade your knowledge and your self. We live in a fast moving market and a fast moving world. Nowadays knowledge is tommorow’s history. Make sure you always know about the latest developments in the market and gain a knowledge advantage towards your colleagues.

 

5. Join a professional network or association

Real resume builders join a professional network and gain visibility within their own market. Your company will be very pleased if you are aware of developments in your industry and if you are making a reputation for yourself that reflects positively on the firm. Fight for a good position within the network, be dominantly and positively present and represent your company and (above all) yourself in the best possible way.

 

6. Read magazines and literature

Stay up-to-date by reading the best possible magazines and litereature. Reading about the market is essential for becoming an employee with a good market value. Actually it is the most important thing to be done increasing your market value.
